Effective Presence on the Web
LAMP is a popular open source web platform.
The acronym refers to the combination of the Linux operating system, the Apache web server, the MySQL database management system and a programming language beginning with ‘P’ – we prefer Perl here at Delphic, but PHP and Python are also used.
Open source solutions are built with interoperability in mind and other technologies can easily be used to substitute for any of these elements.
LAMP essentially describes a ‘stack’ of programs used to develop and deploy websites, content management systems, on-demand web applications and anything else web-related.
Why we use LAMP
We use the LAMP stack because we like open source solutions.
Linux is an extremely reliable operating system that will run on a range of hardware.
Apache is a sound, stable and trusted technology that is used to run over 60% of the entire web.
MySQL is fast, ideal for creating web applications and works well with Linux.
Perl is flexible, gives us precision control and works well with anything that needs coding.
The four open-source elements of this stack fit together particularly well – in a recent study sponsored by the US government the LAMP stack was found to have far fewer coding defects than most other software tested - and some of the other technologies that we use, such as Joomla!, are LAMP projects themselves.
As an extremely dependable set up we use the LAMP stack to develop and deploy solutions for our clients wherever appropriate.
